UVA Wise Women’s Tennis Tops Emory & Henry, 5-2, Sunday At Home

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Men's Tennis Team (5-11, 1-8 SAC) and Women's Tennis Team (4-9, 0-8 SAC) split a pair of South Atlantic Conference matches to Southwest Virginia rival the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Sunday afternoon. The men's team topped the Cavaliers by a 4-3 score to earn the first South Atlantic Conference win in program history while the women's squad dropped a 5-2 decision. 

The match also served as Senior Day for the men's squad, which honored fifth-year Brandon McGuire (Christiansburg, Va.) and senior Zeke Workman (Dalzell, S.C.) prior to first serve.

Men's Match
- The doubles duo of freshman Kartik Parhar (Ludhiana, INDIA) and sophomore Juan Alvarez (Metepec, MEXICO) took down their opponents at No. 1 doubles 6-2 while the team of sophomore Branson Smith (Fletcher, N.C.) and McGuire were victorious at No. 3 doubles by a 6-3 score to take the doubles point and give the Wasps the 1-0 lead.
- Parhar earned another win, this time in the No. 2 singles position as he cruised to the 7-5, 6-2 victory in straight sets.
- Alvarez topped his opponent at the No. 3 singles spot, taking the decisive third set en route to a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 win.
- McGuire clinched the win with his dominant 6-3, 6-2 performance at No. 6 singles.

Women's Match
- UVA Wise took an early 1-0 with a sweep of the doubles portion of the match.
- Sophomore Sabina Chernega (Odesa, UKRAINE) picked up a hard-fought, three-set win at No. 1 singles by a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 scoreline.
- Freshman Natalie Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) won by retirement at No. 4 singles after dominating her opponent 6-0 in the opening set.
- Millie Turner (Chobham, ENGLAND) battled at No. 6 singles but dropped a tough three-set decision 3-6, 6-3, 0-1 (9-11).

- Emory & Henry welcomes Newberry College to town on Tuesday afternoon for a South Atlantic Conference showdown. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
