Emory & Henry Volleyball Blanks Ferrum, 3-0 To Open 2011 Season

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (1-0) made quick work of Ferrum College (0-1) Thursday evening, picking up a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-14) victory in non-conference play. The contest was the first match under the tutelage of Head Coach Dan Clotfelter.

E&H jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and never looked back. Junior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) registered four kills in the opening stanza while sophomore middle hitter Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) had three kills, two service aces and two blocks.

The second set was more of the same for the home team. A six-point serving run by Cockerham mid-way through the set made the lead too much to overcome for the visiting Panthers. Junior outside hitter Morgan Grant (Abingdon, Va.) had five kills in the set for E&H.

The Wasps put the nail in the coffin in the third frame, hitting .412 (10-3-17) as a team and also getting four service aces, including the match-winner by junior middle hitter Kimmie Caudill (Galax, Va.).

Grant led the way with nine kills, 10 digs and nine service aces for E&H. Cockerham finished the night with eight kills while Caudill had an error-free night with seven kills in 11 attempts (.636). Tesh had six kills, four aces and three blocks while sophomore setter Fallon Davis (Mooresville, N.C.) dished out a match-high 29 assists.

For Ferrum, Kayla Trippeer notched eight kills and two blocks and Leah Quinones led the Panthers with 16 assists.

Emory & Henry will take the court again tomorrow as the Wasps travel to Danville, Va., to play in the Cougar Invitational hosted by Averett University. E&H plays Greensboro College at 2:00 p.m., followed by a 6:00 p.m., match against Averett.
