Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Ferrum, 3-0, On The Road To Open The Season

FERRUM, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (1-0) picked up a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-22) win over Ferrum College (0-1) Friday evening to open the 2013 season at Swartz Gym. The Wasps hit .241 (33-13-83) as a team and had 14 service aces in the victory.

E&H opened the match with a 25-18 win in the first set behind a trio of five-point scoring runs. Freshman outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) had three kills and three service aces in the frame. With the score 20-18, the Wasps reeled off five straight points to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, Emory & Henry got out to a 9-1 advantage and never looked back. Pennington continued her dominance from the outside, with six kills on 10 attempts while sophomore right side Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) was a perfect five-for-five on her attacks in the stanza.

The Wasps put the match away in the third set. Down 14-13, E&H took the lead and would not relinquish it to seal the match. Despite only having seven kills in the set, Emory & Henry got seven service aces and took advantage of 10 errors by Ferrum.

Pennington led the way with 11 kills and a .526 hitting percentage (11-1-19) with six digs and three service aces while Stewart also attacked at a .500 (7-1-12) clip for the match. Junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) and freshman setter Autumn Roe (Bluff City, Tenn.) each had 11 assists with Neely adding three kills and three service aces. Senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) had four kills, three aces and a block while senior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) notched a team-high seven digs.

Ferrum was paced by Ashley Ammann's seven kills while Leah Quinones had a double-double with 11 assists and 10 digs. Kellee Lewis and Rachel Stratton each had five kills as well for the Panthers.

Emory & Henry will open the home portion of its season on Tuesday when it hosts Virginia Intermont College. First serve between the Wasps and Cobras at Bob Johnson Court is set for 7:00 p.m.
