Emory & Henry Volleyball Manages Virginia Intermont, 3-1, Tuesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (2-0) battled Virginia Intermont College (0-1) through 25 ties and 11 lead changes en route to a 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 12-25, 25-21) victory Tuesday evening at the John Rutledge King Center.

E&H got out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and was able to fight off six ties and four lead changes to win 25-23. Freshman outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) had four kills in the frame to pace the Wasps.

In the second frame, Emory & Henry saw itself tied 12-12 with Virginia Intermont and scored six of the next eight points for an 18-14 advantage. Later in the set, the Wasps reeled off five-straight points for a seven-point lead and went on to win 25-18.

Virginia Intermont closed the gap to 2-1 after the third stanza. The Cobras took advantage of a six-point scoring run to go up 17-7. E&H was unable to cut the margin to under 10 for the rest of the frame as VI went on to win 25-12.

Emory & Henry took advantage of .268 (14-3-41) hitting in the fourth set to seal the victory. The Wasps had four different scoring runs of three or more points as Pennington, freshman outside hitter Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.) and sophomore right side hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) combined for 11 kills.

Pennington led all players with 13 kills while Doss chipped in 10 of her own. Stewart, senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) and junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) each had five kills while Neely tallied 23 assists and six digs. Senior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) notched a team-high 18 digs.

Virginia Intermont was paced by Shelby Connor's 13 kill night while Ashleigh Manke had 12 kills of her own. Ashley Hooven dished-out 40 assists and completed the double-double with 12 digs. Tiffany Vu had a match-high 25 digs.

Emory & Henry will travel to Roanoke, Va. on Friday and Saturday for four matches in the Hollins Green Invitational. The Wasps will take on host Hollins University in the first contest Friday at 3:00 p.m., and will have another crack at the Cobras at 5:00 p.m.
