Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Randolph, 3-0, To Open ODAC Play Friday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (6-1, 1-0 ODAC) took advantage of a .276 hitting percentage (41-14-101) and 12 service aces as it defeated Randolph College (5-3, 0-2 ODAC) by a Friday evening in its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference match of the season.  E&H won by set scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-18.

The Wasps got out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and pushed their advantage to 10-5 early. Randolph went on a 12-6 run to go up 17-16 points, but Emory & Henry scored nine of the next 11 points to take the frame, 25-19. Freshman outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) had five kills in the set while senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) added four kills.

E&H scored the first seven points of the second stanza on senior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin's (Franklin, Tenn.) serve. The WildCats were able to close the gap to 10-9, but the Wasps pushed the advantage back to 18-12 and cruised to the 25-15 win on five straight points to close the set as Pennington added four more kills in the last seven points of the set.

In the third set, Emory & Henry appeared that it was going to close things out easily, getting out to a 17-9 lead thanks to a 12-4 run. Randolph however fought back with five straight points to close the gap to 17-14. The Wasps then scored eight of the next 12 points to take the match.

Pennington led the way with 13 kills and a .393 (13-2-28) hitting percentage to go along with four digs and two aces. Tesh notched 10 kills and two blocks while freshman outside hitter Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.) and freshman middle Kennady Thomason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) had seven and five kills, respectively. Junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) dished-out 20 assists and led the team with four service aces and nine digs.

Randolph was led by Jordan Templin's 11-kill performance while Celine Rhodes had seven kills. Kerry McMichael and Andrea Mewhinney had 15 and 10 assists, respectively, while Lexi Harrington dug 14 E&H attacks.

Emory & Henry will return to the court tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 p.m., when it hosts Lynchburg College in an ODAC matchup.
