Emory & Henry Volleyball Rallies To Defeat Eastern Mennonite, 3-2, Thursday Evening

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (9-5, 4-0 ODAC) had to rally from a two set deficit against Eastern Mennonite University (6-9, 2-3 ODAC) Thursday evening but came away with a 3-2 (16-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 16-14) victory at Yoder Arena in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

EMU dominated the first two sets of play en route to a 2-0 lead in the match. The Royals were led by McKenna Carter's 14-kill performance.  D. Probst and Kayley Argenbright each reached double figures in kills with 14 and 10, respectively.

Emory & Henry emerged in the third set and got its offense going, claiming the next two frames by a 25-22 score. Though the Wasps' hitting percentage was not impressive, they made plays when necessary to tie the match at two sets apiece to set up a fifth and deciding stanza.

The two squads battled back and forth to a 9-9 tie mid-way through the fifth set. Eastern Mennonite took a 12-10 lead forcing E&H to call a time out. The Royals continued their run after the break and lead 14-11, needing just one point to claim the match. Emory & Henry then reeled off five-straight points to take the match with sophomore right side hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) accounting for three of the five kills during the stretch.

Stewart led the Wasps with a season-high 17 kills while freshman outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 13 kills and 17 digs. Senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) had 10 kills and six blocks while junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) dished out 42 assists. Senior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) notched a match-high 27 digs to go along with three service aces.

In addition the Royals' attack, Dani Driver had 45 assists and 19 digs while Katie Miller registered 18 digs. Katie Miller had 13 digs and four blocks.

Emory & Henry will travel to Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday afternoon to face the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
