Meredith Volleyball Sweeps Emory & Henry, 3-0, Sunday Afternoon

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Meredith College Volleyball Team (11-6) picked up a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-15) win over Emory & Henry College (9-6) Sunday afternoon at Weatherspoon Gym. The Avenging Angels attacked at a .262 (44-16-107) clip compared to just .087 (23-15-92) for the Wasps.

Meredith was led by Karlie Long, who tallied 15 kills and 13 digs in the match while Anna Hayes and Molly Markley had six kills apiece. Clarke Glendenning dished out 19 assists while Hayes had 19 assists of her own. Keegan Leech and Emery McGee each notched 12 digs while Jasmine Aguinaldo had six service aces.

Emory & Henry freshman outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) had nine kills and a .320 (9-1-25) hitting percentage to lead the way for the Wasps. Senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) notched eight kills in addition to two blocks. Junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) registered 16 assists and senior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) tallied a match-high 16 digs.

The Avenging Angels got out to a 7-1 lead in the first set but the Wasps were able to close the gap to 8-4. Meredith then built its lead slowly and took the lead in the match with a 25-17 victory.

In the second frame, MC used a pair of serving runs early highlighted by five service aces to take a 14-5 lead. The Wasps got within three points (23-20) late in the set, but a pair of kills by the Avenging Angels made the score 25-20 for the 2-0 lead in the match.

Meredith sealed the match with a 16-6-37 (.270) hitting performance in the third stanza. With the score tied at six, the Angels went on a 10-4 run for a 16-10 lead. MC scored six straight points late and held on for the 25-15 win for the contest.

Emory & Henry will travel to Salem on Tuesday evening for a 6:30 p.m. contest with ODAC foe Roanoke College.
