Roanoke Volleyball Upends Emory & Henry, 3-0, Tuesday Evening

SALEM, Va. – The Roanoke College Volleyball Team (13-6, 4-1 ODAC) picked up a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) win over visiting Emory & Henry College (9-7, 4-1 ODAC) Tuesday evening at C. Homer Bast Gymnasium in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Wasps have dropped six of their last seven matches after opening the season with an 8-1 record.

The Maroons got out to a 1-0 lead in the match after a trio of five-point scoring runs in the first set. Roanoke broke open an 8-8 match with a 13-4 run for a 21-12 lead. E&H was able to close the gap thanks to five straight points, but RC took the set, 25-19.

In the second stanza, Roanoke slowly built its lead behind .387 (15-3-31) hitting. Macey Tyree had six kills in the set to lead the Maroons. Emory & Henry hit a match-high .333 (12-3-27) with senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) notching four kills, but could not make up the difference.

Roanoke took the match in the third set behind Samantha Klostermann's seven kills as it attacked at a .517 (18-3-29) percentage. The Wasps closed the gap to 17-14, but the Maroons pushed back to extend their lead to 20-15 and went on to win by a 25-17 score.

Klostermann led all players with 16 kills and added 11 digs to complete the double-double for Roanoke. Macey Tyree had 11 kills and 10 digs while MacKenzie Tyree tallied a match-high 20 digs. Alexandra Martin and Jessica Block notched 20 and 17 assists, respectively.

Emory & Henry was paced by Tesh, who had nine kills, three blocks and two aces in the match. Freshman outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) registered six kills while sophomore Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) had five kills of her own. Junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) dished out 20 assists while freshman outside hitter Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.)  had a team-high 11 digs.

The Wasps will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday when they travel to Bridgewater for a tri-match with the Eagles of Bridgewater College and the Panthers of Virginia Union University. Match times are set for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
