Emory & Henry Volleyball Outlasts Guilford, 3-2, Tuesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (14-10, 6-4 ODAC) needed all five sets in order to defeat Guilford College (11-14, 4-7 ODAC) by a 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-12) score Tuesday evening at the John Rutledge King Center.

Emory & Henry got out to a 1-0 lead in the match after the first set. Senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) and freshman outside hitter Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.) each had five kills in the frame.

Guilford won the next two sets to go up 2-1 overall thanks to solid hitting and defense. In the third set, the Quakers put together a trio of serving runs to go up 19-12 and held on through a rally by the Wasps for the 25-20 win.

E&H took control in the fourth set to tie things up at two frames apiece. The Wasps attacked at a .281 clip compared to just .074 for the Quakers. Emory & Henry led by as much as 11 points (21-10) and carried the momentum into the fifth and deciding stanza.

The two squads battled back and forth in the fifth with eight ties and seven lead changes in the set alone. After Guilford forced the changeover as the first team to reach eight points, Emory & Henry won six of the next nine points to go up 13-11 and force a timeout. The Quakers sided-out coming back but the Wasps got a pair of kills to complete the match, 15-12.

Tesh had a match-high 19 kills and hit .371 while freshman outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) added 16 kills and 19 digs. Junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) dished out 54 assists while senior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) notched 18 assists.

Brittany Freeman had 15 kills and Kelsey Ruehling added 10 kills and 13 digs for Guilford while Taylor Whitley notched 39 assists and 15 digs. Meredith Foscue had 30 digs while Malikah French notched a match-high six blocks to go along with eight kills and six digs.

Emory & Henry will have a week off before it travels to the south side of Knoxville to face off against Maryville (Tenn.) College. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
