Emory & Henry Volleyball Opens 2015 Season With A 3-1 Win Over Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (1-0) made it 11-straight seasons with an opening day win Tuesday as it defeated Ferrum College (1-0) by a 3-1 score (25-14, 25-22, 14-25, 25-16) at Swartz Gym.

The Wasps jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after hitting .259 (13-6-27) in the first set. A 9-1 scoring run midway through the frame pushed the lead to 19-7. Emory & Henry took a 2-0 lead after the second set thanks to service aces and serving miscues on the Ferrum's behalf.

In the third set, the Panthers slowly gained momentum, scoring points two-for-one against the Wasps and put together a pair of three-point runs late to seal the 25-14 set victory.

Emory & Henry bounced back in the fourth set, attacking at an 11-3-26 (.308) clip to put Ferrum away. Sophomore outside hitter Ali Singleton (Mount Jackson, Va.) had five kills in the fourth frame alone to lead the Wasps to the victory.

Wasp junior Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.) led all players with 12 kills and added two blocks while Singleton finished with 11 kills and three blocks and a .500 (11-1-20) hitting percentage. Junior middle Kennady Thomason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and freshman middle Kate Franklin (Blountville, Tenn.) each had six blocks in the match while junior outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) notched a match-high 17 digs. Sophomore setter Sarah Scott (Collinsville, Va.) dished out 29 assists while junior libero Emily Hinshaw (Boone, N.C.) had 14 digs and five service aces.

Ferrum was paced by Ebony Crawford's nine kills while Hannah Helbert added seven kills. Cheyenne Strickland had a team-high 19 assists while Sarah Hendrix notched 13 digs.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Saturday when it travels to Danville, Virginia for the 21st Annual Averett Cougar Classic. The Wasps will take on the Quakers of Guilford College at 10:00 a.m., and face host Averett at 2:00 p.m.
