Emory & Henry Volleyball Storms Back For 3-2 Win Over Erskine Saturday

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (4-9, 1-5 SAC) got back to its winning ways with a five-set win over Erskine College (1-14, 1-5 Carolinas) on Saturday afternoon. The Wasps rallied from an early deficit to win by scores of 15-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, and 15-11.

How It Happened

- The teams were even through the initial stages and the score stood at 8-8. The Flying Fleet would win eight of the next ten points to establish a lead they would never relinquish, as they cruised to the opening set 25-15 win.

- Erskine once again started the frame as they ended the first and were first to 15 points as they held a six-point advantage. E&H woke up late in the set, mounting an enormous 11-0 rally to take the second stanza and even the match. 

- The third set was hotly contested throughout and the squads were deadlocked at 20-20 heading into the deciding points. The match of runs continued and Erskine rattled off the final five points to take the set 25-20.

- The Wasps answered in the fourth frame. Emory & Henry galloped out to a lead that reached as many as 12 points en route to a 25-18 win, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

- The fifth frame was another close affair, with both teams trading blows and the score was level at 8-8. The Wasps buckled down in the final moments and closed out the Flying Fleet by a 15-11 margin.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior outside hitter Brianna Hogan (Front Royal, Va.) led the offense with nine kills and four digs. Fellow senior middle Hannah Watson (Kingsport, Tenn.) had eight kills, four digs, three blocks and dished out two assists while junior outside hitter Sophia Kaiser (Stafford, Va.) contributed eight kills, 12 digs and three assists.

- Sophomore Payton Rolfsen (Fort Wayne, Ind.) posted a double-double with a team-high 29 assists, 12 digs, seven kills, five blocks and a pair of service aces. Senior defensive specialist Libby Bickelhaupt (Fort Myers, Fla.) had a team-high 17 digs and five assists in the win.

Erskine Individual Leaders
- Brianna Beyerle led Erskine with 10 kills, three blocks, three digs, an assist and a service ace. Ali Angell recorded a double-double with her 11 digs, ten kills, one block, one assist and a service ace.

- Lena Mykins had match-highs in digs and assists with 26 and 32 respectively.

- Emory & Henry returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday, October 3 when they make the trek to Greeneville, Tenn. to take on the Pioneers of Tusculum University. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Pioneer Arena.
