Montreat Baseball Sweeps Emory & Henry Tuesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Montreat College Baseball Team (11-10) picked up a pair of wins against Emory & Henry College (3-8) Tuesday. The Cavaliers took game one by a 14-8 score and came from behind for a 4-2 win in game two.

Game One – Montreat 14, Emory & Henry 8 (seven innings)
Montreat jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, highlighted by a three-run homer by Norman Kelly. The Wasps answered with two in the bottom of the second as freshman catcher Josh Howard (Salem, Va.) tagged a two-run blast down the left field line.

E&H got within one, 4-3, in the third as fifth-year centerfielder Hayden Milley (Clover, S.C.) snuck a home run of his own inside the left field fair pole.

The Cavaliers bounced back with six in the fourth as Tarik Latchmansingh and Ashton Hawkins went back-to-back for a total of four runs and a 10-3 lead. A two-run triple by E&H sophomore third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) in the bottom of the frame made it a 10-5 contest.

Emory & Henry closed the gap to 11-8 in the bottom of the fifth, thanks in part to a two-run single by freshman right fielder Ben Williams (Montpelier, Va.). Three insurance runs came for Montreat in the seventh for the 14-8 final score.

Harold Aguilera got the win, allowing five runs on six hits with five strikeouts in four innings. Zach Gilbertsen pitched the final 2.1 innings, earning the save as he struck out five. Wasp freshman Justin Day (Strasburg, Va.) suffered the loss, with nine runs on seven hits despite striking out six in four innings.

Game Two – Montreat 4, Emory & Henry 2 (seven innings)
The Wasps got on the board in the bottom of the third as sophomore first baseman McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.) plated junior designated hitter Eli Milhorn (Bluff City, Tenn.) with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Montreat answered with two runs in the fourth on a home run by Michael Bell to make it 2-1. In the fifth, Milley hit his second round-tripper of the day to tie the contest.

The Cavaliers went ahead for good in the sixth as a run scored on a double play by Latchmansingh and Daniel Wetmore made it 4-2 when he came home on a wild pitch.

Hunter Smith earned the win in relief, allowing just one run on three hits in 2.2 innings. Caden Wright came in to pitch the seventh to grab the save. E&H freshman Zack McRae (Greensboro, N.C.) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in three innings as he struck out four.
