Emory & Henry Men’s Tennis – Senior Day

EMORY, Va. – In conjunction with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference office, the Emory & Henry College Department of Athletics wishes to honor seniors whose seasons were unexpectedly cut short this spring by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Our recognitions continue today with men's tennis. These four seniors were part of a turnaround season in 2018-19 where the Wasps saw an eight-win improvement over the previous year and posted the team's first winning season in six years.

 

Cooper Garrett

Cooper is a native of Gate City, Virginia and a graduate of Gate City High School. A four-year letterwinner on the tennis court for E&H, he has won a total of 29 matches with 16 victories coming in singles play. He posted an 8-4 record as a junior with an 8-2 mark at No. 5 singles. In doubles, Cooper went 9-4 a year ago with six wins at the No. 2 flight. In the 2019-20 season, he was 4-1 in singles and 3-3 in doubles action. Outside of tennis, Cooper is a Bonner Scholar at E&H. He was a member of the 2018-19 ODAC All-Academic Team and a 2019 ITA Scholar-Athlete. A business management and economics double major, Cooper has plans to attend Milligan College to pursue a Master of Business Administration.

  

 

Staymon Johnson

Staymon is a native of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina and a graduate of East Surry High School. A three-year member of the tennis team, Staymon has won six career matches. He went 3-1 at No. 3 doubles as a junior and has singles wins at both the No. 4 and No. 6 flights over his career. Staymon is also a four-year letterwinner on the football team and was the E&H Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2018-19 academic year. He is a three-year member of the ODAC All-Academic Team and a 2019 ITA Scholar-Athlete. Off the field and court, Staymon is a leader in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. A Mathematics Education major, Staymon plans to pursue a graduate assistantship in football or to teach high school math and coach.

  

Grayson McCarty

Grayson is a native of Marion, Virginia and a graduate of Marion Senior High School. A four-year letterwinner for the Wasps, Grayson has played at several positions in the Wasps lineup over the course of his career with 25 career victories across singles and doubles. As a junior, he posted a 7-4 overall record winning three matches at No. 3 and four matches at No. 4. In doubles play, seven of his 11 career wins have come at the No. 2 flight. In the 2019-20 season, Grayson held a 3-3 record in both singles and doubles. He was a member of the ODAC All-Academic Team as a freshman. An exercise science major, Grayson will attend the Emory & Henry School of Health Sciences to study occupational therapy.

 

  

Dalton Shipley

Dalton is a native of Gate City, Virginia and a graduate of Gate City High School. A four-year letterwinner for E&H, Dalton has won 14 matches across singles and doubles. He has three victories at both No. 3 and No. 4 singles and has claimed four of his eight doubles wins at the third flight. In the 2019-20 season, he posted a 3-3 record at No. 3 doubles. An exercise science and business administration double major, Dalton plans to attend optometry school following graduation.
