Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps Meredith, 8-0 And 9-1, Sunday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (6-4) picked up a pair of non-conference wins over visiting Meredith College (1-9) Sunday afternoon at home. The Wasps claimed an 8-0 shutout victory in game one and won game two by a 9-1 score. Both contests ended in the fifth inning via the "Eight-Run Advantage Rule."

Game One – Emory & Henry 8, Meredith 0 (five innings)
E&H went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first on a two-run blast to left-centerfield by senior Alex Thomas (Orlando, Fla.).

Junior Kyndall Hiatt (Ararat, Va.) got things started in the second with a double and senior Leanna Toler (Abingdon, Va.) plated two more with a double of her own later in the frame. After Thomas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, sophomore Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) drove in two with a single down the left field line to make it 8-0.

Two and a half scoreless innings later, the contest was called for the Wasps.

Junior Cameron Derr (Cornelius, N.C.) earned the win, pitching three no-hit innings with five strikeouts. Senior Tiffany Cole (Wise, Va.) struck out one in the final two innings of play. Meredith's Myah Morse suffered the loss, permitting eight runs on four hits and four walks in 1.1 innings.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 9, Meredith 1 (five innings)
The Avenging Angels took a 1-0 lead in the second as Suzanne Taylor hit a double to left centerfield. E&H erased the deficit with five runs in the second as Mince and junior Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.) each tagged two-run home runs, the first collegiate round-trippers for both players.

In the fourth, the Wasps added two more runs for a 7-1 advantage and ended the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth on a single to right-center by Mince for the 9-1 final.

Junior Alex Braun (Cornelius, N.C.) picked up the victory, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts. Sarah Gundlach of Meredith took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Up Next
Emory & Henry will take to the air this week as it travels to Tucson, Arizona for six games in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Wasps will open play in the event on Friday with games against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (8 p.m. EST/6 p.m. MST) and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (10 p.m. EST/8 p.m. MST).
