Sarah Sturgill is entering her fourth year as a Student Assistant for the Emory & Henry College Softball Team. Sturgill’s responsibilities include charting, assisting with practice drills and occasional office duties.

Sturgill is studying secondary mathematics at Emory & Henry and plans to teach high school mathematics after graduation. She is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Program, is a volunteer coach for a t-ball team and has an Ergonomics Internship.

Sturgill played softball at Marion Senior High School in addition to spending time on the basketball, track and cheerleading teams. A two-year softball letter winner in high school, Sturgill was selected for the Sportsmaship Award. In addition to athletics, she was a four-year Big M Award winner, assisted with Homecoming and Prom decorations, and was a member of several clubs (Beta, Performing Arts, Key and Science). While working with the Key Club, Sturgill participated in a Headstart Christmas Party and taught Safety Education to elementary school students. 

Sturgill also stays active in her community. Some of Sturgill’s past and present volunteer work includes singing in her Church choir, being a Bible School volunteer for a mission trip, participating in Trash for Treats, and being a member of the Royal Oak Players Performance.

Sturgill’s great uncle, Jewel Rhea, played football at Emory & Henry and is in the College’s Sports Hall of Fame. Other relatives who played college athletics include Kellen Wohlford (cousin, Radford baseball), Tanner DeBord (cousin, Roanoke swimming), Everett Hurst (cousin, Roanoke basketball), and Jack Sturgill (great uncle, Carson-Newman football). 

Sturgill currently resides in her native Marion, Virginia with her parents, Richard and Lynda Sturgill. She also has a sister (Meghan Stuart), brother-in-law (Zach Stuart), two nieces (Kayleigh and Peyton) and one nephew (Elijah).
