Emory & Henry Selects Kyla King As Head Volleyball Coach

Kyla King hired as Head Volleyball Coach at E&H.

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Department of Athletics and Interim Director of Athletics Anne Crutchfield are pleased to announce the hiring of Kyla King as Head Volleyball Coach. King will transition into her role during the spring semester as she completes the academic year in the Sumner County Tennessee School System.

"We are very excited to welcome Kyla King to our coaching staff," commented Crutchfield. "Kyla brings a wealth of experience from the high school and club levels. Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the game will certainly elevate our volleyball program to new heights."

King joins the E&H staff after spending the past six years at the Head Volleyball Coach and a special education teacher at Hendersonville High School in Hendersonville, Tennessee. In addition to directing the coaching, scheduling and operations for the Commandos' three teams, she also implemented a middle school camp program that saw attendance grow by 200 percent over the course of four years.

"I am excited for the opportunity to serve as the Head Volleyball Coach at Emory & Henry," said King. "I have a great deal of respect for Division III athletics and education coming from a similar background.  When I visited the campus I quickly saw how invested the school is in its student athletes and wanted to immediately join the Emory & Henry family."

King also has strong ties to Junior Olympic volleyball, serving as a coach for Ethos Volleyball Club in Nashville. She has coached ages 13 through 18 since beginning with the club in 2012 including a pair of all-star teams in 2014 and 2015. King has also coached with the Alliance Volleyball Club-North out of Franklin, Tennessee and BRAVO Volleyball Club in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

"It is my goal to build a culture which will promote our student-athletes to perform at their highest level while building on new skills as the game continues to evolve.  Additionally, I hope to build strong ties with the community, so that high school athletes will see what Emory & Henry is doing and want to play for the Wasps," King added.

A product of NCAA Division III, King was a four-year letterwinner at Maryville (Tenn.) College and led the Scots to three Great South Athletic Conference championships and four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. During her career which spanned from 2001-04, MC posted a 122-29 overall record.

King, a native of East Tennessee, graduated from Maryville in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in child development and learning. She holds a pair of master's degrees from Western Kentucky University in psychology (2009) and exceptional education (2012).
