Intermont Equestrian Captures Third-Straight IDA National Championship

LONG VALLEY, N.J. – The Intermont Equestrian at Emory & Henry College IDA Team won yet another national championship in Intercollegiate Dressage Association competition. The Wasps made it three straight years of capturing the team title with a victory Sunday at the Centenary (N.J.) College Equestrian Center.

E&H brings home the Beukma National Team Championship Trophy, scoring 39 points across the four levels. Averett University finished as the Reserve Champion with 34 points.

At the First Level, junior Nick Martino (Bel Air, Md.) notched a third-place finish (68.047%). Senior Karissa Donohue (Benson, N.C.) was seventh in the Upper Training Level, scoring a 67.500% while sophomore Eli Worth-Jones (Abingdon, Va.) took third in the Lower Training Level on a 69.022%.

In the final test of the day, junior Taylor Carroll (Garner, N.C.) solidified the championship for the Wasps finishing first in the Introductory Level. Her score of 72.188% was the top mark across all four levels and earned her High-Point Rider of the Day honors.

Johnson & Wales (R.I) University finished third while fourth place went to host Centenary. Otterbein University rounded out the top five with Region H rival Virginia Tech in sixth as a wild-card entry.

The team title comes on the heels of two individual championships and a pair of reserve championships on Individual Day on Saturday. Worth-Jones and junior Sierra Davenport (Chilhowie, Va.) become the program’s 13th and 14th individual IDA Champions.

The title is the sixth in IDA competition for the program and the 19th overall. Intermont Equestrian won IDA championships in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2014 when the program was sponsored by Virginia Intermont College. With six total IDA titles, the Wasps break the tie with Mount Holyoke College for the most National Championships.

Intermont Equestrian also holds nine Tournament of Champions Series, three Intercollegiate Horse Show Association and two Affiliated National Riding Commission championships to its credit, all of which were won under the VI moniker.
