Emory & Henry University and the Emory & Henry University Department of Athletics see athletic competition as an extension of the classroom. Through competition, student-athletes are provided with an opportunity to learn lessons which are difficult to teach in other environments. Providing an environment conducive to a positive playing experience is a primary goal of Emory & Henry for both home and away teams.
Unlike most areas of education, athletics are played before spectators. Student-athletes look, not only to their coaches and teammates but to the people in the stands – their parents, fellow students and citizens of the community – for positive reinforcement that they have made the right choice in wanting to compete for their school.
The ideals of good sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and integrity should always encompass intercollegiate athletics. In perception and practice, good sportsmanship is be defined as qualities of behavior characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others. Our athletic fields should be the laboratories to produce good sports who reflect "fair play" in every area of life.
The following sportsmanship statement is read prior to all home competitions at Emory & Henry University:
"The NCAA and its member institutions promote good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches and spectators. We request your cooperation by supporting the participants and officials in a positive manner. Profanity, racial or sexist comments, or other intimidating actions directed at players, coaches, officials or team representatives will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from (insert specific facility name). In accordance with E&H regulations, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products is prohibited."
