The Robert W. Gibson III Weight Room is located in the John Rutledge King Center. The weight room boasts 5,000 square feet of workout space with the latest equipment available to help the Wasps train year-round. The weight room has 16 double-sided half racks, each equipped with over 2,000 pounds of weight. A variety of bars, nine sets of PowerBlock dumbbells, nine plyo boxes, six hardwood Olympic platforms, 12 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, and a full line of Life Fitness selectorized equipment round out the extensive offerings of the facility.
Strength & Conditioning is a year-round emphasis for the intercollegiate athletes at Emory & Henry University. Student-athletes can expect even more, as all 16 stations are equipped with tablets and FYTT — the department’s primary training software platform. FYTT allows coaches to deliver individualized programs directly to each athlete, track performance data, and monitor progress in real time. This technology enhances communication, accountability, and efficiency across all training environments.
Director of Strength and Conditioning, Sam Roome, and his staff (Sarai Flores, Tyler Smith, and Isaac Spainhour) operate and maintain the Robert W. Gibson III Weight Room. They design individualized programs that include a regimen of strength training, power development, speed enhancement, mobility, and endurance training. The Strength & Conditioning staff works directly with the Sports Medicine team to assess student-athlete limitations, evaluate return-to-play readiness, and develop individualized modifications tailored to each athlete’s needs. This integrated approach ensures that every athlete can train safely and effectively, maximizing performance while minimizing risk. Student-athletes are assessed daily to monitor mobility, strength, and recovery, allowing the staff to make timely adjustments that optimize training outcomes.
Furthermore, performance testing occurs at specific times throughout the year to gauge improvements and ensure the effectiveness of programming.
Under the daily guidance of Roome and his staff, student-athletes move through structured, intentional training designed for long-term growth. Backed by national certifications and years of experience, our committed strength and conditioning coaches deliver the expertise and accountability that drive constant athlete development.
