Tyler Smith joined the Emory & Henry University Department as an Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning in June of 2025. He comes to Emory after spending the last 2 years at Averett University, where he served as both an Assistant Sports Performance Coach (2023) and then the Director of Sports Performance (July, 2024).

A native of King, North Carolina, Smith gained experience in the strength and conditioning field as an intern with the United States Army Special Operations Command at Fort Liberty, North Carolina, during the summer of 2022. He also served as a strength and conditioning intern for the football program at Division I North Carolina A&T University during the summer of 2021.

Smith graduated from Winston-Salem State University in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He then continued his academic career at Averett University where he completed his Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Leadership in May of 2025.

Smith was a three-year member of the Division II Rams’ football program and also ran cross country for one season. Smith is also a part of the U.S. Army Reserves, serving as a quartermaster officer with the 518th Sustainment Brigade in Knightdale, North Carolina.

Smith is certified with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He also holds certifications with the United States of America Weightlifting (USAW) as a Level 1 Coach, along with adult first aid/CPR/AED certification through the American Red Cross.

Smith will oversee the strength and conditioning program for men's soccer, women's rugby, baseball, women's lacrosse, cross country, track and field - throws and will assist with the football program.
