Greensboro Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry, 3-1, In Wasps' 2012 Season Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Greensboro College Baseball Team (4-2) picked up a 3-1 victory over Emory & Henry College (0-1) Tuesday afternoon at Leonard Park. The Pride took advantage of three errors by the Wasps en route to the victory.

Greensboro got on the board in the bottom of the first as Tony Folsum scored on a RBI ground out by Austin Catherina.

E&H equalized the contest at one run apiece in the top of the fourth inning. Senior catcher Collin Metz (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled through the left side with one out and got to second on a single by senior first baseman Jesse Blizzard (Independence, Va.). An error by the second baseman and a subsequent wild pitch brought Metz home to give the Wasps their first run of the 2012 season.

The Pride retook the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Dan Melton got a lead-off single and moved to second on an error by the first baseman. Aaron Navarro singled and then got in a rundown, scoring Melton for the 2-1 lead.

Greensboro added its final run in the eighth. Matthew Parker singled up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out. After stealing third, Parker scored on a wild pitch.

Jacob Cadle (2-0) got the win for the Pride, scattering five hits and one run across five innings of work, striking out three. Emory & Henry junior Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) suffered the loss.

Melton went two-for-two for Greensboro with a run scored and Parker was one for one with a run off the bench.

Blizzard led the way for the Wasps, going two-for-three with a walk while junior center fielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) was two-for-four on the day.

Emory & Henry will travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia this weekend for a three-game, two-day series with Covenant College. The Wasps and the Scots will face off on Friday at 2:00 p.m., and will take the field again Saturday at noon for a doubleheader.
