Covenant Baseball Takes Two From Emory & Henry, 12-0 And 13-3, Friday Afternoon

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Covenant College Baseball Team (2-1) picked up two big wins over Emory & Henry College (0-3) Friday afternoon in non-conference play. The Scots defeated the Wasps 12-0 and 13-3 in a pair of seven-inning games.

Game One - Covenant 12, Emory & Henry 0

Covenant broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third inning. A sacrifice fly by David Lockwood got the Scots on the board and a double to right field by Sterling Witt cleared the bases to make it 3-0.

In the Scots' half of the fourth, Lockwood got on thanks to a double to left center and eventually scored thanks to a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-0.

Covenant added two runs in the fifth inning before piling on five more in the sixth. The sixth frame saw Scott Gillespie plate three runs on a double to centerfield, giving Covenant the 12-0 win.

Tyler Smith picked up the win for the Scots, going six innings allowing just two hits while striking out four. Emory & Henry junior Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) fell to 0-2 on the season in five innings of work.

Game Two - Covenant 13, Emory & Henry 3

Emory & Henry got on the board first in the top of the second as junior left fielder Mark Robertson (Roanoke, Va.) singled to right field scoring sophomore first baseman Michael Myers (Covington, Va.).

Covenant would not be outdone in the bottom half of the second frame, plating eight runs on seven hits, highlighted by a two-run triple by Kurt Wiles and a two-run home run by Lockwood.

The Scots extended their lead by five in the fifth going up 13-1. Four hits and three wild pitches aided Covenant in attaining its insurance runs.

The Wasps picked up two in the top of the seventh to make the final score 13-3. With two outs and a runner on first base, sophomore second baseman Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and junior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) put together back-to-back RBI hits to give E&H their highest run total in the young 2012 season.

Andre Glover got the win for Covenant, scattering three hits over five innings and striking out four. E&H junior Will Dingus (Powhatan, Va.) was credited with the loss in his first appearance of the year.

The Wasps and Scots will meet in the final game of the series on Saturday at noon.
