Covenant Baseball Completes Series Sweep Of Emory & Henry With 9-2 Win Saturday

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant College Baseball Team (3-1) picked their third straight win over Emory & Henry College (0-4) Saturday. The Scots defeated the Wasps by a 9-2 score.

Covenant got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one on and two outs, Chris Rollins slammed a triple into right center field to score the game's first run.

The Scots broke the contest open in the fifth frame, scoring five runs on three hits and four walks. A three-run home run by Sterling Witt highlighted the inning as Covenant pushed its lead to 6-0.

Emory & Henry responded with a run in the top of the sixth. With two outs and a runner on first, senior left fielder Remington Hedgepeth (Winston-Salem, N.C.) doubled to right centerfield, plating a run. In the bottom half of the inning, Covenant added three more scores to go up 9-1.

The Wasps got another run in the eighth to make the score 9-2. With a runner on second base, senior shortstop Josh McMillian (Amelia, Va.) singled to right field, scoring sophomore Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.).

Micah Mabe picked up the win for Covenant, pitching five innings in relief. He allowed just three hits and one run while striking out four. At the plate, the Scots got timely hitting, but no player recorded a multi-hit game.

Emory & Henry junior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) and senior catcher Collin Metz (Cape Coral, Fla.) each went two-for-four on the day. McMillian was one-for-four at the plate with a RBI and a run scored. Senior Joe Washburn (Rocky Mount, Va.) suffered the loss on the mound, in 4.2 innings of work, allowing five runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will host Greensboro College in its home opener on Wednesday afternoon. The Wasps and Pride will take the field at 2:00 p.m.
