Bluefield Baseball Takes Care Of Emory & Henry, 14-8, Tuesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Bluefield College Baseball Team (14-9) picked up a 14-8 win over Emory & Henry College (4-11) in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Porterfield/Devault Field.

Bluefield got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out RBI single by Joe Gatewood. E&H would score three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. The side was highlighted by a two-run shot to left field by senior left fielder Remington Hedgepeth (Winston-Salem, N.C.).

The Rams scored five runs in the top of the second on six hits including a three-run homer by Zac Russell-Myers. Kaleb Long and Zac Goodyear each had RBI singles in the inning as well as Bluefield went up 6-3.

In the fifth inning, the two squads each added a run to make the score 7-4. A RBI single by Will Simpson scored Goodyear for Bluefield while Emory & Henry got its run on a solo home run by senior second baseman Josh McMillian (Amelia, Va.).

The Rams put up three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings thanks to six combined hits. Kaleb Long hit a two-run single to left center in the sixth while his brother, Kyle,  plated three with a home run in the seventh.

In the E&H sixth, sophomore third baseman Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) hit his first home run on the year, a two-run drive to left field.

Down 14-7 in the bottom of the ninth, the Wasps were able to score a final run on a sacrifice fly by junior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.).

Bluefield's Andrew Kirks picked up the win on the mound, scattering eight hits over seven innings and striking out five to move to 2-0 on the year. Senior Joe Washburn (Rocky Mount, Va.) suffered the loss for E&H in just two innings of work.

At the plate for the Rams, Russell-Myers was two-for-four with two walks, scoring four runs and driving in three runs. Kyle Long was three-for-six with three RBI and two runs while Kaleb Long was three-for-five with three RBI.

The Wasps were led offensively by Hedgepeth with two RBI and two runs scored on two-for-five hitting while McMillian was two-for-five with two runs and a RBI.

Emory & Henry will host Milligan College on Wednesday afternoon at Porterfield/Devault Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
