Milligan Baseball Blasts Emory & Henry, 14-8, Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Milligan College Baseball Team (13-14) picked up a 14-8 win in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon over Emory & Henry College (4-12) at Porterfield/Devault Field.

Both teams plated runs in the first inning to make the score 1-1. Cory Hilton singled through the left side to drive in Wesley Jones for Milligan. In the bottom of the frame, senior left fielder Remington Hedgepeth (Winston-Salem, N.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home sophomore shortstop Ricky Sowers (Blacksburg, Va.).

E&H got a run in the second to go up 2-1. With the bases loaded senior catcher Collin Metz (Cape Coral, Fla.) drew a walk with two outs.

Milligan added two runs in the top of the fourth. A RBI single by Kyle Kolat and a sacrifice fly by Joe Purus provided the offense for the Buffaloes, as they went up 3-2. The Wasps equalized the game at three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hedgepeth got his second RBI of the game on a single through the left side.

Milligan added three runs in the top of the sixth inning on three straight RBI doubles to take a 6-3 lead. Two innings later the Buffs took control of the game, scoring six runs on five hits and two walks. A two-run single by Purus highlighted the inning, making the score 12-3.

In the ninth inning, Milligan added two runs on a triple down the left field line by Luke Kirk and a single up the middle by Hilton, extending the lead to 14-3. Emory & Henry plated five runs in the bottom on the ninth, but would come up short, 14-8. The Wasps got a two-run home run by Sowers and a two-run double by junior Logan Ball (Honaker, Va.) in the frame.

Cody Crompton picked up the win for Milligan, scattering four hits and three runs over five innings of work.  Emory & Henry junior Will Dingus (Powhatan, Va.) fell to 0-2 on the year, allowing six hits on nine runs in six innings.

Hilton led the Buffs offensively with four hits on five at bats with two runs and two RBI. Kolat was three for six with three runs and two RBI while Purus went two for three with four RBI and two runs scored.

The Wasps were led by Houff as he went two-for-two with three walks and two runs scored. Hedgepeth was two-for-four with three RBI and a run scored.

Emory & Henry will visit Maryville (Tenn.) College on Thursday evening for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Scots.
