Ferrum Baseball Gets Past Emory & Henry, 7-5, Wednesday Evening

FERRUM, Va. – The Ferrum College Baseball Team (15-8) picked up a 7-5 non-conference victory over Emory & Henry College (6-14) Wednesday evening at Panther Field. The Panthers relied solely on a seven-run second inning en route to the victory.

Ferrum scored all seven of its runs in the second inning on seven hits including back-to-back home runs by Paul Jaglowski and Wes Walker.

E&H got a run in the top of the third to get on the board. After junior third baseman Will Schulhof (Berryville, Va.) walked to lead off the inning, an error and two wild pitches brought him home to make the score 7-1.

The rally continued for the Wasps in the sixth frame. With no outs and the bases loaded senior catcher Collin Metz (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring senior second baseman Josh McMillian (Amelia, Va.). A passed ball and subsequent error brought in two more runs for Emory & Henry to make the score 7-4.

In the top of the seventh, E&H got another run to draw the margin to 7-5. A two-out double by junior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) and set up Metz to drive him in with a single to left field.

The Wasps would have the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth and were threating to push more runs across the plate, but the Panthers' defense held on for the 7-5 win.

Ferrum's Grayson Gibson picked up the win in relief, despite allowing seven hits and four runs in 2.2 innings of work while Javin Metz was credited with the save. E&H senior Joe Washburn (Rocky Mount, Va.) went the distance for the Wasps scattering 11 hits and five walks over eight innings while striking out three.

At the plate, Taryn Hayden was two-for-three for the Panthers, driving in a run and scoring once while Jagalowski was one for three with two RBI and a run.

Emory & Henry's Houff went four-for-five with two runs scored while Metz finished the day two-for-four with two RBI.

The Wasps will travel to Ashland, Va. on Friday to take on the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. The ODAC doubleheader has been rescheduled from Saturday due to the forecast of inclement weather and is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
