EMORY, Va. – The Maryville (Tenn.) College Baseball Team (11-14) scored early and often in defeating Emory & Henry College (7-16) Tuesday afternoon at Porterfield/Devault Field. The Wasps hit four home runs in the game led by senior catcher Collin Metz (Cape Coral, Fla.) with two round-trippers.
The Scots scored 10 unanswered runs in the first four innings to open the contest. They got three runs in both the first and second innings highlighted by a two-run single down the left field line by Mikee Moore in the second. Moore would finish three-for-four with five RBI before leaving the contest early.
Emory & Henry got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 10-4. With no outs and two runners on base, senior left fielder Remington Hedgepeth (Winston-Salem, N.C.) homered to left centerfield. Senior second baseman Josh McMillian (Amelia, Va.) had a RBI single in the frame as well.
After Maryville scored two runs in the top of the fifth on two hits and two errors by E&H to make the score 12-4, the Wasps took advantage of three walks and two hit batsmen, scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 12-7.
In the top of the sixth, the Scots plated four more runs to give them their total of 16. RBI singles by Blake Gentry and Sam Waltermyer highlighted the inning for Maryville.
Emory & Henry would score the final six runs of the contest, but couldn't get any closer than 13. Metz hit his first home run of the season to left field on a 2-0 count in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 16-8.
The Wasps would add two more runs in the seventh thanks to a bases-clearing double to left centerfield by Metz with two runners on and no outs. E&H got three runs in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 16-13. A one-out solo home run by McMillian started things off and a double to left field by sophomore shortstop Ricky Sowers (Blacksburg, Va.) set up Metz for his second shot of the day.
Maryville's Taylor Denton picked up the win in relief to move to 2-0 on the year while E&H's Will Dingus fell to 1-3 with the loss.
At the plate, each of the Scots nine starters had at least one hit and one RBI in the contest before leaving in the seventh inning. While they were led by Moore, Nic Baker went two-for-three with three runs scored and a RBI and Cory Kopec was two-for-three with two scores and two runs driven in.
Emory & Henry's Metz stole the show for with four hits on six at bats with four runs and five RBI. McMillian finished two-for-three with three RBI and a run while Sowers and junior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) each had two hits.
The Wasps will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Wednesday when they travel to face the Maroons of Roanoke College. E&H won the first game of the series, 8-3, at home on March 20. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
