Emory & Henry Baseball Rallies To Defeat Roanoke, 4-3, Wednesday Night

SALEM, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (8-16, 6-4 ODAC) closed out the season series with Roanoke College (11-12, 3-5 ODAC) Wednesday night, defeating the Maroons by a 4-3 score. The Wasps pick up their first series sweep of the year in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

Roanoke started the game with runs in the first and second frames. A RBI double in the first by Mark Manthe highlighted the first two frames. The Maroons made the score 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Wallman.

E&H held the Maroons scoreless from there on and got on the board in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 3-2. A triple by junior first baseman Logan Ball (Honaker, Va.) drove in a run while a groundout by senior designated hitter Jesse Blizzard (Independence, Va.) plated the other.

The Wasps took the lead in the eighth. A RBI single up the middle by sophomore shortstop Ricky Sowers (Blacksburg, Va.) and a wild pitch proved to be the difference in the game.

Senior Joe Washburn (Fries, Va.) picked up the complete game victory for the Wasps, scattering seven hits and five walks over nine innings of work while striking out four. Roanoke's Cameron Holshouser took the loss in relief.

At the plate, E&H got hits when needed and took advantage of four Roanoke errors, but no player had a multi-hit game. Ball and Sowers were each one-for-four with a RBI and a run scored. Roanoke's Alexander Crittenden was two-for-two with a walk on the night to lead the Maroons offensively.

Emory & Henry will host Bridgewater in an ODAC doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
