Emory & Henry Baseball Sweeps Guilford, 9-6 And 13-8, Saturday Afternoon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (15-21, 11-7 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference victories over Guilford College (21-18, 9-9 ODAC) Saturday afternoon. The Wasps, who were picked to finish last in the league, won by scores of 9-6 and 13-8 to solidify a third-place tie in the ODAC regular season.

With the wins, Emory & Henry has earned a berth in the ODAC Baseball Tournament for the first time since 1999.

Game One – Emory & Henry 9, Guilford 6
Guilford got out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning of play but E&H came back with four unanswered runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Wasps and Quakers would trade runs throughout the game, but Emory & Henry would come out on top, pounding out 16 hits in the 9-6 victory.

Senior catcher Collin Metz (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning while senior second baseman Josh McMillian (Amelia, Va.) was four-for-six on the day with two runs scored and two RBI.

Emory & Henry junior Will Dingus (Powhatan, Va.) picked up the complete-game victory, moving to 3-5 on the year. He scattered 10 hits and four earned runs over nine innings of work while striking out two.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 13, Guilford 8
Six Emory & Henry players had a multi-hit game in the nightcap as the Wasps rolled over the Quakers 13-8. E&H scored four runs in the top of the first and never trailed, leading by as much as 7-1 midway through the contest.

Five Emory & Henry players hit home runs in the game, including a solo shot by Metz and a two-run blast by senior first baseman Logan Ball (Honaker, Va.) in the third inning. Junior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.)  hit a two-run homer to left center in the fourth while McMillian and senior right fielder Remington Hedgepeth (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each had round-trippers in the top of the sixth frame.

Junior Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) earned his fourth win of the season on the mound for E&H, striking out four over seven innings of work.

Emory & Henry will next take the field on Thursday evening in the 2012 ODAC Baseball Tournament. The tournament will take place at Calvin Falwell Field and is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday of next week.
