Covenant Baseball Takes Series With 11-5 Win Over Emory & Henry Saturday

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant College Baseball Team (4-1) picked up an 11-5 win over Emory & Henry College (2-4) Saturday afternoon to win the season series, two games to one.

The Scots got out to a 3-0 lead after the bottom of the first. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double to centerfield by Scott Gillespie. Covenant added a run to push the advantage to 4-0 in the third after David Lockwood doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a fielding error by the third baseman.

Emory & Henry got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth. Four straight singles by the Wasps including RBI base hits by junior Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and sophomore designated hitter Scott Pennington (Chilhowie, Va.) trimmed the margin to 4-2.

Covenant responded with two runs in its half of the fourth inning to push the lead back to 6-2. With K.C. Simmons on first base and one out, Will Cleland tripled to centerfield scoring Simmons. Lockwood then hit a fly ball to left field, scoring Cleland from third. The Scots plated two more runs in the sixth on a single to centerfield by Cleland to make the score 8-2.

E&H got three runs in the seventh. With runners on second and third, junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) found the centerfield grass for a pair of RBI. Pennington hit a sacrifice fly three batters later plating the third run of the inning for the 8-5 score.

The Scots added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth to make the final 11-5 margin.

Garrett Kriston picked up the win as he went 4.2 innings and struck out four. Cleland was three-for-four on the day with three runs and three RBI while Lockwood and Perry Rigby each had a pair of hits.

Emory & Henry senior Will Dingus (Powhatan, Va.) fell to 0-1 on the year as he allowed six runs on four hits in just four innings of work. Wise went three-for-five with two RBI and a run while Rotton was two-for-four and Pennington drove in a pair.

The Wasps will next take the field on Wednesday when they travel to Maryville, Tenn. for a 4:00 p.m. contest with the Scots of Maryville College.
