Emory & Henry Baseball Routs Maryville, 12-4, Wednesday Afternoon On The Road

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (3-4) scored early and often as it defeated Maryville (Tenn.) College (4-5) in a rout, 12-4, Wednesday afternoon at Scotland Yard.

The Wasps got out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning as they got four hits in the frame. Junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) had a sacrifice fly and freshman first baseman Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) plated a run with a single to right field.

Emory & Henry added three runs in the top of the second. Senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded to score two and Wise had his second sac fly of the game to make the score 5-0.

E&H extended its lead to 8-0 in the fourth as it got three more runs on two hits and two Maryville errors. Hoff got his third and fourth RBI of the game, singling to left field to highlight the inning.

The Scots got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Zack Blonder doubled down the right field line to plate a run, but the Wasps added another three runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Houff singled up the middle for the first run and was then driven home by Wise as he homered to left field for the 11-1 advantage.

Emory & Henry got its final run in the top of the seventh frame and Maryville had two in the seventh and one in the eighth, but was unable to rally from the deficit.

Houff finished the day four-for-five with five RBI and three runs scored. Wise drove in four runs on the day with a home run and a pair of sacrifice flies. Junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and senior designated hitter Sam Line (Inman, S.C.) each had a pair of hits on the day.

Freshman Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) picked up the win as he scattered three hits and a run over six innings of work while striking out four. Freshmen Ty Hill (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Austin Collins (Morristown, Tenn.) each pitched effectively in relief.

Maryville was led by Blonder with two hits and two RBI while Landon Talley was two-for-three with two runs scored. Keylon Holloway took the loss for the ScotoHoufs as he gave up five runs and seven hits in two innings of work. MC used seven pitchers on the afternoon, none of whom pitched more than two innings.

Emory & Henry will travel to Danville, Va. on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series with Averett University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. in Saturday's doubleheader.
