EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (5-5) picked up the season sweep of Maryville (Tenn.) College (5-9) Wednesday afternoon as the Wasps defeated the visiting Scots, 9-3, at Porterfield/DeVault Field.
After Maryville left the bases loaded in the top of the first, E&H plated a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Wasps got RBI singles from senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) and junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) in the frame.
Emory & Henry put up more runs in the third inning. With two on and one out, sophomore third baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) hit a towering shot to left field, making the score 5-0.
The Wasps pushed their advantage to 7-0 after five as freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) plated a pair with a two-out single through the right side.
In the top of the sixth, the Scots finally got on the board. After Nick Dean tripled down the right field line to lead off the inning, Landon Talley homered to straight centerfield to close the gap to 7-2. Dean was on the other end of a scoring play in the seventh as his double to centerfield brought home Matt Jones, who singled to right field to start things off.
E&H extended its margin back to six with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Houff doubled to lead off the inning and then scored on a stolen base and failed pickoff attempt. After Wise singled, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout, Stockstill got his third RBI of the day, doubling to centerfield to make the score 9-3.
Wasp freshman Ty Hill (Knoxville, Tenn.) moved to 2-1 on the year as he went five innings on the mound. He scattered eight hits and three walks over the span but the E&H defense held strong as only two runs crossed the plate. Freshmen Austin Collins (Morristown, Tenn.) and Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior Will Dingus (Powhatan, Va.) each pitched strongly in relief for Emory & Henry.
Christopher went two for four on the day with three RBI and two runs scored while Stockstill was two-for-four with three RBI. Houff had a game-high three hits and a pair of runs while Woullard went two-for-four.
Garrett McDaniel fell to 0-1 with the loss as he allowed five runs and six hits over 2.1 innings of work. Dean had three hits to lead the Scots while Jones and Zack Blonder each were two-for-four.
Emory & Henry will remain at home on Saturday when it welcomes Eastern Mennonite University for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at noon.
