Emory & Henry Baseball Splits A Pair With Washington and Lee Saturday Afternoon At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (8-15, 3-7 ODAC) split a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference contests with Washington and Lee University (13-11, 7-5 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field. The Wasps won game one, 3-2, while the Generals took the nightcap by a 21-5 score.

Game One – Emory & Henry 3, Washington and Lee 2
W&L got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Joe Scalzo led the frame off with a triple to left field and was driven home a batter later as Jonathan Stutts hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Generals made it 2-0 in the sixth. Keegan Dolan reached home after a throwing error on the second baseman allowed him to take an extra base after a single by Alex Mait.

Emory & Henry found itself down to its last three outs of the game and got things going. After senior second baseman Sam Line (Inman, S.C.) led things off with a walk, junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) singled to put two runners on. Junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) plated Line with a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw. Sophomore first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) was intentionally walked, loading the bases.

Freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) came to the plate with a career opportunity in front of him. With an 0-1 count, Stockstill singled to centerfield, driving in Woullard and junior Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.), who pinch ran for Wise.

Woullard led the way for E&H with two hits while Stockstill drove in a pair with his only hit of the game. Senior Will Dingus (Powhatan, Va.) picked up the win in relief as he struck out one in one inning of work. Senior Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) went eight innings, scattering eight hits and two runs with five strikeouts.

The Generals were led by Mait and Taylor Rowe with a pair of hits each. Eric Wisotsky took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk as he was unable to get an out.

Game Two – Washington and Lee 21, Emory & Henry 5
W&L started the game off with seven runs in the first three innings and never looked back to salvage the doubleheader split. Emory & Henry was able to close the gap to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth as Stockstill plated a pair of runs on a double down the left field line.

The Generals made their lead insurmountable with 12 runs in the seventh, nearly batting around twice. As a team, Washington and Lee had nine hits in the frame alone highlighted by a three-run home run by Scalzo and a three-run double by Rowe.

Emory & Henry got single runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to make the final score 21-5.

W&L banged out 23 hits in the game as Stutts was four-for-six with two runs and two RBI. Will Salley, Alex Maragos and Nick Biumi each had three hits in the contest with Maragos driving in four and Salley scoring four times. Nate Plein picked up the win as he scattered three runs and seven hits over six innings of work, striking out eight.

Emory & Henry managed 13 hits but it wasn't enough. Lambert went two-for-three in his designated hitter spot and freshman catcher Scott Bowers (Madisonville, Tenn.) was two-for-two with a run as a substitute. Freshman Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) fell to 2-3 on the year as he allowed eight runs on nine hits in the first four innings of the game.

The Wasps will travel to face the Highland Cavaliers of the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Easter Monday at 4:00 p.m. The game, orginially scheduled for Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., has been moved up 26 hours in anticipation of cold, wet weather on Tuesday.
