Bluefield Baseball Downs Emory & Henry, 18-7, Wednesday Evening

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield College Baseball Team (15-18) used a six-run sixth inning as it defeated Emory & Henry College (8-16) by an 18-7 score Wednesday evening at Bowen Field.

Bluefield got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but E&H was able to tie the game at two after its half of the third. The Rams broke out with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the third highlighted by a two-run double by Christian Burton.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bluefield added three more runs thanks in part to a two-run homer by Trevor Martin for the 10-2 lead. The Rams made it 16-3 in the bottom of the sixth, pouding out seven hits with Burton hitting a two-run triple and Martin hitting his second home run of the game.

Emory & Henry got a run in the seventh as senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) doubled down the left field line. The Wasps added two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth for the 18-7 final score.

Bluefield's Martin went three-for-five on the day with a pair of home runs, four runs scored and four RBI. Zac Russell-Myers and Jacob Wright were each four-for-six with two runs scored while Burton had four RBI on three hits. Kyle Long picked up the win, scattering three runs and five hits over six innings of work.

Houff went three-for-four with two runs scored while sophomore first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) also had a trio of hits. Junior designated hitter Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) and freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) each drove in a pair of runs. Freshman Austin Collins (Morristown, Tenn.) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings.

Emory & Henry will host Shenandoah University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at noon. The contests will serve as Senior Day for the Wasps.
