No. 18 Shenandoah Baseball Escapes Emory & Henry With Two ODAC Wins Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The No. 18 Shenandoah University Baseball Team (18-7, 10-6 ODAC) got all it wanted from Emory & Henry College (8-18, 3-9 ODAC) Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The nationally-ranked Hornets came away with 7-5 and 4-3 wins, in close contests on the Wasps' Senior Day.

Game One – No. 18 Shenandoah  7, Emory & Henry 5
SU got on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run by Michael Paul. The Wasps evened the score at one in the third as senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The Hornets added a pair of runs in the fourth frame for a 3-1 lead as John Wilt plated a pair with a two-out single to centerfield.

In the bottom of the fourth, Emory & Henry tied the contest at three runs apiece. Senior right fielder Mark Robertson (Roanoke, Va.) drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. Houff got his second RBI of the game, this time on a single to right field.

E&H took a 5-3 lead after the bottom of the fifth as freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) drove in two runs on a two-out single.

Shenandoah got the lead back with a three-run homer by Dan Powers in the top of the seventh, 6-5. The Hornets added an insurance run in the ninth as Powers hit his second of the game, this time to left field.

Powers led SU at the plate as he went two-for-five with four RBI and two runs scored. Michael Scimanico picked up the win as he pitched 3.2 innings in relief. Cameron Lundmark earned the save, striking out three batters in four outs.

Stockstill was two-for-three at the plate with a pair of RBI while Houff drove in two runs as well. Junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) and junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) each had two hits in the contest. Senior Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) took the loss, despite pitching seven strong innings with 11 hits and four strikeouts.

Game Two – No. 18 Shenandoah 4, Emory & Henry 3
Shenandoah broke open a 0-0 game in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of runs on three hits. Daniel Freshley had a RBI single in the frame.

E&H responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Stockstill and junior third baseman Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) both had run-scoring base hits for the Wasps, making the score 2-2.

The Hornets got single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-2 lead. J.J. McDaniel homered to left field in the seventh frame.

Down to their last three outs, the Wasps were able to get one run in the bottom of the ninth. Stockstill pushed a score across as he reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. The single run wouldn't be enough as the nationally-ranked Hornets escaped with their second win of the day.

Wilt and Paul each had two hits for Shenandoah, which managed only seven base knocks in the game. Eric Liskey picked up his second win of the season, scattering four hits and two unearned runs over five innings of work.

Stockstill led the way at the plate again with two hits and two RBI in four plate appearances. Freshman pitcher Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) went the distance, allowing just seven hits and four runs with three strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as it travels to Bridgewater College for an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
