Bridgewater Baseball Takes Two From Emory & Henry Sunday Afternoon

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College Baseball Team claimed two wins over Emory & Henry College Sunday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The Eagles won by scores of 5-4 and 9-3.

Game One – Bridgewater 5, Emory & Henry 4 (10 innings)
E&H got out to a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the first thanks to RBI singles by senior designated hitter Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) and junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.). The Eagles were able to close the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the first.

The Wasps got another run in the top of the third as freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) plated Wise with a single to left field to make the score 3-1.

Bridgewater tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead 4-3 in the seventh on a solo home run by Nick Fulk.

Down to its last three outs, Emory & Henry tied the contest 4-4. Wise was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded but the Wasps couldn't plate another run.

After the Eagles failed to score in the bottom of the ninth and the Wasps were scoreless in the top of the 10th, BC got the winning run in the bottom of the 10th frame. With a runner on third and no outs, Andrew Hacker hit a sacrifice fly to win the game.

Fulk was three-for-four with three runs scored to lead Bridgewater while Hacker drove in a pair of runs. Justin Petock went 8.2 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out two. Ryan Leake picked up the win in relief.

E&H was paced by wise with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored while sophomore first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) also had two hits. Freshman Ty Hill (Knoxville, Tenn.) went eight innings, allowing four runs on just six hits and one walk.

Game Two – Bridgewater 9, Emory & Henry 3
The Eagles started off with a run in the bottom of the third and took a 5-0 lead after four innings.

Emory & Henry closed the gap to 5-2 after the fifth as senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) and junior third baseman Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) had run-scoring singles.

Bridgewater got three insurance runs in the seventh to go up 9-2. Ryan Fitzgerald tripled down the left field line to score both runners.  The Wasps scored a final run in the top of the eighth stanza as Stockstill drove in a run on a groundout for the 9-3 margin.

Tyler Hoffman was three for four with two runs scored while Fitzgerald plated a trio of runners and scored twice. Mark Smith picked up the win, scattering seven hits over six innings of work and striking out seven. Tyler Conley earned the save, striking out five in three innings.

E&H was paced by Houff as she went three-for-five with a RBI while Rotton had a pair of hits. Freshman Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.)  took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing five runs.

The Wasps will host Virginia Intermont College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., at Porterfield/DeVault Field.
