Virginia Intermont Baseball Takes Care Of Emory & Henry, 12-3, Tuesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Virginia Intermont College Baseball Team (21-11) picked up a 12-3 win over Emory & Henry College (8-21) Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Porterfield/DeVault Field.

The Cobras broke open a 1-1 game in the top of the third with a four-run inning. Ryan Hankins highlighted the inning with a two-run homer to centerfield.

Emory & Henry closed the gap to 5-2 in the bottom half of the third as senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) led off with a solo home run.

VI got two more runs in the top of the fifth as Hankins hit his second round-tripper of the day, another two-run shot. The Cobras made it 9-2 with three runs in the seventh, as Fabian Placencia hit a two-run single down the right field line.

In the top of the eighth, Virginia Intermont added three more on a three-run shot by Kevin Nelson to make the score 12-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, E&H got another run to make the final score 12-3. Senior Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) singled to second base, plating sophomore first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) who led off the inning with a single up the middle.

Placencia had three hits and two RBI while Hankins drove in four runs on two home runs and two runs scored. Derrick Murphy picked up the win, scattering seven hits and six strikeouts over six innings of work.

Freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) went four-for-four on the day while Houff and Christopher each had two hits. Junior D.J. Russ (Greensboro, N.C.) took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in four innings with four strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will host Guilford College on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.
