Guilford Baseball Downs Emory & Henry, 14-7, Wednesday In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Baseball Team (15-17, 7-10 ODAC) picked up a 14-7 victory over Emory & Henry College (8-22, 3-12 ODAC) Wednesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Porterfield/DeVault Field.

The Quakers got things started with three runs in the top of the first inning. A RBI triple by Kent Peterson that got the scoring started highlighted the inning.

Emory & Henry got three runs of its own in the bottom of the first to tie the contest. Sophomore first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) doubled to centerfield to score a run while freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) had a sacrifice fly to plate senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.), who led off with a triple.

Guilford broke the game open with four runs in the third.  Jordan Slate hit a two-run home run to left centerfield on a 1-0 count to make the score 7-3.

E&H got a run back in the bottom of the third as junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) mashed his team-leading sixth homer of the year over the left field wall. The Wasps made it 7-5 after the fourth as Houff singled to shallow centerfield, plating freshman right fielder Ben Barnett (Knoxville, Tenn.).

In the top of the fifth, the Quakers scored four runs to go up 11-5. John Mason Smith led the inning off with a home run to left field and Slate drove in his third run of the day with a double to left center.

Emory & Henry scored its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of sacrifice flies. Freshman third baseman Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior second baseman Sam Line (Inman, S.C.) each drove in runs in the frame.

In the top of the ninth, Guilford added three insurance runs for the final 14-7 margin. Herc Ingles got things started with a RBI single to right field. D.J. Phillips had a two-run single on the next at bat before the Wasps retired the side.

Charles Noble led the Quakers with three hits and three runs scored while Slate had three RBI and three runs on two hits and was hit by pitch twice. Lou Trosch picked up the win in relief, going 3.2 and striking out three.

Barnett led the Wasps with a game-high four hits. Junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) was three-for-five at the plate while Houff, Stockstill and Christopher each had a pair of hits. Senior Will Dingus (Powhatan, Va.) suffered the loss allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will travel to Ashland, Va. on Saturday for an ODAC doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
