Randolph-Macon Baseball Takes Two From Emory & Henry Saturday In ODAC Action

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon College Baseball Team (16-13-1, 10-7-1 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins over Emory & Henry College (8-24, 3-14 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field. The Yellow Jackets won by scores of 6-2 and 17-4.

Game One – Randolph-Macon 6, Emory & Henry 2
Randolph-Macon got five runs in the bottom of the third to start things off. Mitchell Keeler hit a three-run home run to left field and Tim Benjamin hit a two-run double down the left field line to make the score 5-0.  

The Wasps responded with two runs in the top of the fourth as senior second baseman Sam Line (Inman, S.C.) hit a two-out single to left field that plated a pair of runs for the 5-2 margin.

R-MC got an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Jake Fletcher led off the inning with a home run to left field.

E&H had base runners in each of the last three innings but was unable to push them across for scores.

Fletcher led the Yellow Jackets as he went three-for-four at the plate with two runs scored. Keeler was had two hits and three RBI while Benjamin plated two runs. Jake Bram picked up the win, going five innings with two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Matt Fischgrund earned the save as he scattered four hits and five strikeouts over the last five innings of work.

Emory & Henry saw three players have multiple hits in the game as freshman third baseman Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore first baseman Will Copenhaver (Meadowview, Va.) had two hits and two runs scored. Line drove in both runs of the contest with his base hit in the fourth. Senior Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) went the distance in the loss allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out nine.

Game Two - Randolph-Macon 17, Emory & Henry 4
The Yellow Jackets scored in all but one inning as they rolled to a 17-4 win in the nightcap. R-MC pounded out 18 hits in the contest and took advantage of 12 walks and three hit batsmen en route to the victory.

Emory & Henry got a pair of runs in the top of the third to make the score 3-2. With two runners on and no outs, junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) singled up the middle to drive in two.

Randolph-Macon would score 14 more runs, highlighted by a four run fourth and a six run seventh before E&H struck again. In the top of the ninth, with two runners on and two outs, sophomore designated hitter Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) singled down the right field line to plate both runners on to make the final score 17-4.

For the game, six different R-MC players had multiple hits as Fischgrund and Zach Broaddus had three hits and three RBI to lead the way. Michael Helbig went seven innings in the victory, scattering six hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Woullard led the way for the Wasps as he went four-for-four with two RBI while Christopher drove in two runs with his lone hit of the day. Freshman Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) fell to 2-5 with the loss, as he allowed nine runs on 11 hits.

Emory & Henry will travel to Greensboro, N.C. on Tuesday to complete its season series with Guilford College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
