MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Berry College Baseball Team (3-3) used a five-run second inning to spark an 11-2 victory over visiting Emory & Henry College (1-2) Sunday afternoon at William Bowdoin Field. With the win, the Vikings take the series from the Wasps, two games to one.
Dusty Tyson led things off for Berry in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Vikings, and though the Wasps got Alex McGill to ground into a double play on the next at bat, Tyson was able to score from third for a 1-0 lead.
Berry made it 6-0 with five runs in the second frame on five hits and one E&H error. With two out, Tyson singled through the left side, driving in a run. T.C. Boyd followed things up with a RBI single scoring two runs. Stephen Gaylor and McGill both had RBI base hits in the inning as well.
The Vikings took a 9-0 lead, with three more runs in the third. Boyd highlighted the frame with a two RBI single up the middle.
Emory & Henry got on the board in the top of the fifth to make the score 9-1. Junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) doubled down the left field line to start the inning and was driven home by senior second baseman Caleb Rotton's (Boiling Springs, S.C.) single up the middle on the next at bat.
Berry answered with two runs in the bottom half off the fifth stanza as E&H struggled to find the strike zone with three walks and two wild pitches. A throwing error by the catcher with two outs gave the Vikings enough freedom to push two more across for an 11-1 lead.
Things settled down for the next three innings with only two players reaching base for the two sides combined. Emory & Henry scored the last run of the game in the ninth as Rotton drove in his second run of the day, scoring sophomore outfielder Brett Johnson (Sugar Grove, Va.) for the 11-2 final margin.
The Vikings were led on the day by Boyd's two-for-three performance at the plate adding a walk, a run and three RBI. Tyson drove in a run and scored four while Joyce scored three times for Berry. T.J. Montgomery earned the win on the hill, allowing just one run on five hits in five innings of work.
Rotton led the E&H effort at the plate, going two-for five with two RBI. Woullard finished the day with two hits and a run. Sophomore right-hander Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) suffered the loss in his first outing of the season, allowing three earned runs on six hits and four walks in just three innings pitched.
Emory & Henry will return to the diamond on Monday afternoon when it travels to face Greensboro College at 3:00 p.m.
