Virginia Intermont Baseball Takes Down Emory & Henry Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Virginia Intermont College Baseball Team (6-8) scored 10 runs between the third and sixth inning en route to a 16-1 win over Emory & Henry College (5-5) Wednesday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field.

After two scoreless innings, the Cobras turned things on in the top of the third, scoring two runs. VI added three runs on three hits in the fourth and made it 6-0 after the fifth frame. Taylor Reeves led off the sixth inning with a solo home run as Virginia Intermont extended its lead to 10-0 with two-thirds of the contest complete.

In the top of the ninth, VI added six runs. Both Taylor McInnis and Seth Davis drove in two runs in the inning.

Emory & Henry was able to avoid the shutout, scoring its lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior infielder Caleb Rotton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) tripled to left centerfield to get things started and was driven home two batters later when senior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) reached base on an error by the second baseman for the final margin.

VI got 17 hits on the day led by Reeves, who went three-for-five with three runs scored. Davis had two hits and two RBI while Alex Couch was two for three with two RBI and a walk. Luke Harris picked up the win on the mound as the Cobras used a staff-day strategy with their pitching. He allowed just one hit in three innings, striking out three. Wonder Castillo also set down a trio of batters in two innings of no-hit work.

Rotton went two-for-four at the plate for the Wasps while Wise had a hit, an RBI and drew the team's only walk of the game. Junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and sophomore third baseman Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) rounded out E&H's five base hits on the day. Freshman Brandon Gearhart (Check, Va.) was one of eight Emory & Henry pitchers on the day, allowing two runs in his collegiate debut to take the loss.

Emory & Henry will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday at noon when it travels to face Lynchburg College.
