Virginia Intermont Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry, 10-4, Wednesday Evening

BRISTOL, Va. – The Virginia Intermont College Baseball Team (15-14) picked up a 10-4 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (8-12) Wednesday evening at a cold DeVault Memorial Stadium.

E&H got out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of VI errors. With two runners on and one out, senior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) belted a double to left centerfield to put the Wasps on the board. Senior designated hitter D.J. Russ (Greensboro, N.C.) reached on an error later in the frame as two more runs came across.

The Cobras responded with two runs in their first turn at bat. Seth Davis and Taylor Reeves each had RBI singles to close the gap to 3-2. Virginia Intermont took the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the second on a double down the left field line by Alex Couch.

After VI added a single run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3, E&H closed the margin to 5-4 in the seventh. A hit, an error and a pair of walks plated the run, but the Wasps left the table set, grounding out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Virginia Intermont put up three runs in the seventh highlighted by a two-run single to centerfield by Terrell Thompson and added two more in the eighth for the final 10-4 margin on Noah Overstreet's base hit up the middle.

The Cobras had 12 hits in the game led by Reeves and Thompson, who both tallied two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Couch was also two-for-two with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Demetrus Ingram picked up the win, allowing just one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Freshman second baseman Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.) was two-for-four at the plate for E&H while junior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) went two-for-five with a pair of runs scored. Wise had the Wasps' other base hit and walked twice in the game. Freshman Matthew Whisnant (Connolly Springs, N.C.) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in two innings pitched.

Emory & Henry will return to action on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m., when it travels to face off against Milligan College.
