Guilford Baseball Slips Past Emory & Henry, 3-2, Sunday Afternoon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College Baseball Team (13-18, 6-9 ODAC) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat visiting Emory & Henry College (8-18, 5-8 ODAC) Sunday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Edgar McBane Field.

After the first third of the contest went scoreless, the Quakers got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the fourth. John Macon Smith led off the inning with an infield single scored on a wild pitch. After allowing two more hits, the Wasps got out of the inning with a double play and a fielder's choice.

Guilford made it 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh. After Corey Wallace singled to get things started, he moved to third thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a failed pickoff attempt. Gabe Mirabelli then singled to centerfield to drive in the run.

Emory & Henry tied things up at two runs apiece in the eighth. Junior Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and two batters later, junior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) blasted a two-run home run, his third of the season.

The Quakers bounced back to re-take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. With Herc Ingles on first base, Smith tripled down the right field line for the 3-2 final score. A 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth sealed the win for Guilford.

Smith led the way offensively for GC as he was three-for-three with a run scored and a RBI. Six other Quakers had base knocks in the game. Andrew Martin earned the win in relief while Avery Rogers picked up the save in the ninth inning, striking out two.

Christopher drove in two runs as he went two-for-four with a home run. Sophomore third baseman Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) was also two-for-four in the game. Junior left-hander Aaron Sparks (Troutman, N.C.) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits with one strikeout.

Emory & Henry will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Virginia Intermont College at 3:00 p.m.
