Guilford Baseball Takes Down Emory & Henry, 11-2, Sunday In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Baseball Team (18-18, 8-9 ODAC) scored in six of the game's nine innings as it defeated Emory & Henry College (9-22, 5-11 ODAC) by an 11-2 score at Porterfield/DeVault Field in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. With the win, the Quakers sweep the season series with the Wasps.

Guilford got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and pushed its advantage to 5-0 after four.

E&H got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth. Senior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) singled to left field to start things off and three batters later a bases-loaded groundout to third base by freshman left fielder Connor Bronson (Fincastle, Va.) drove home Wise.

The Wasps forced back-to-back scoreless innings by the Quakers and cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth. With Wise on third after a leadoff walk and a double by sophomore third baseman Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.), senior designated hitter D.J. Russ (Greensboro, N.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in the run.

Guilford added two runs on sacrifice flies in the seventh and Dan Ditota drove in two in the eighth with a single to left field. John Macon Smith had a solo home run in the top of the ninth and a bases loaded hit batsman made the final score 11-2 in favor of the Quakers.

Corey Wallace led the Guilford offense as he went four-for-five with two RBI. Ditota notched three hits, two runs and two RBI while Smith scored three times on two hits and tallied a RBI. John Todd picked up the win, scattering six hits and two runs over 6.1 innings of work.

Kirk was three-for-three for Emory & Henry while junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) notched a two-hit afternoon and Wise scored twice. Sophomore Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) fell to 3-5 with the loss, allowing seven runs in 6.1 innings pitched with just two strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will remain at home on Tuesday when it hosts Maryville (Tenn.) College at 4:00 p.m.
