Berry Baseball Completes Series Sweep With 11-6 Win Over Emory & Henry Sunday

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Berry College Baseball Team (3-0) scored in every inning except the second, propelling it to an 11-6 win over Emory & Henry College (0-3) Sunday afternoon at William R. Bowdoin Field.

The Vikings got individual runs in the first and third frames but the Wasps responded with two in the fourth to tie things up. Senior designated hitter Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) put E&H on the board with a RBI single and sophomore left fielder Zach Smith (Powder Springs, Ga.) notched a double later in the frame to drive in the other run.

Berry regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth and had its big inning in the fifth, tacking on four runs for a 7-2 advantage. A two-single by Jacob Delk highlighted the frame. The Vikings tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh for a 10-3 lead.

Emory & Henry notched a trio of scores in the eighth as freshman catcher Corbin Hockensmith (Huntersville, N.C.) and freshman shortstop Ross French (Bridgewater, Va.) had back-to-back run-scoring base hits. The Vikings added a final run in the bottom half of the inning to make the final score 11-6.

BC's Jon Melson picked up the win in relief, pitching two innings of one-hit ball. Ben Jernigan scored twice and drove in three runs while Grant Perkins had a two-for-three day with a run and two RBI.

Wasp freshman Troy Polen (Lexington, N.C.) took the loss in his first collegiate appearance. Lineberry, Smith and junior second baseman Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.) each had a pair of hits while French finished with two RBI.

Emory & Henry's next game will be on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Covenant College. The contest is the start of a three-game set, with a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday starting at noon.
