Washington and Lee Baseball Takes Two From Emory & Henry Saturday In ODAC Action

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Baseball Team (24-10, 12-5 ODAC) picked up two Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins over Emory & Henry College (9-27, 4-13 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Captain Dick Smith Field. The Generals won game one by an 8-1 score and completed the sweep with a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.

Game One – Washington and Lee 8, Emory & Henry 1
Emory & Henry broke open a scoreless game with a run in the top of the fifth. Senior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) tagged his ninth home run of the season down the left field line to put the Wasps on the board.

W&L answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to four hits and an error by the Wasps. Austin Crane and Matt Wasson had RBI singles to drive in the runs. The Generals made it 3-0 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Riley Stout.

In the seventh, Washington and Lee scored five runs for the 8-1 advantage. Luke Myer and Ryan Weston each had run-scoring doubles in the inning.

Weston and Crane each had three hits and drove in a run while Weston scored twice. Chadwick Feeley notched two hits as a substitute. Tom Concklin earned the win, scattering one run and eight hits over seven innings of work with six strikeouts.

Freshman second baseman Daulton Horne (Bristol, Va.) and sophomore first baseman Carson Bryant (Hickory, N.C.) led the way with three and two hits, respectively, while Lineberry's home run provided the lone score for the Wasps. Senior left-hander Aaron Sparks (Troutman, N.C.) allowed three earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Game Two – Washington and Lee 10, Emory & Henry 6
The Wasps scored in the first on a single by Bryant, but the Generals answered in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homer by Myer. Myer drove in two more runs in the fourth with another base hit as W&L extended its lead to 6-1.

In the sixth, the Wasps added a run to make it 6-2 as Lineberry and Bryant tallied back-to-back doubles. Emory & Henry tied things up in the seventh with four runs. Lineberry and freshman shortstop Ross French (Bridgewater, Va.) each had RBI base hits in the inning.

Washington and Lee got four runs of its own after the stretch to retake the lead, 10-6. Crane drove in a pair with a single to right center to highlight the frame.

E&H got one on in the eighth and put two runners aboard in the ninth, but could not produce any further offense.

Myer had five RBI on two hits with two runs scored while Cory Paton and Crane tallied three hits, two runs and two RBI. Danny Devereux picked up the victory, allowing one run on three hits in two innings of relief.

Bryant finished the game five-for-five with two RBI to tie the school record for hits in a game. Lineberry added two hits, a run and a RBI. Freshman Brandon Stetkiewicz (Raleigh, N.C.) suffered the loss in relief, facing a pair of batters in the seventh.

Emory & Henry will return home for its final four games of the year. The Wasps will face the Roanoke College Maroons in a single ODAC game on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
