Roanoke Baseball Tops Emory & Henry, 11-4, Wednesday Afternoon In League Play

EMORY, Va. – The Roanoke College Baseball Team (15-12, 12-2 ODAC) built a 6-1 lead after three innings on its way to an 11-4 victory over Emory & Henry College (3-25, 0-14 ODAC) Wednesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.

How It Happened
The Wasps drew first blood with sophomore first baseman Joe Tolone's (Concord, N.C.) sacrifice fly to centerfield in the bottom of the first. Roanoke answered with two runs in the second and four in the third for the 6-1 advantage. Will Merriken drove in three of the six runs during the span.

In the bottom of the seventh, E&H scored a pair of runs after a dropped infield fly play with the bases loaded to close the gap to 6-3. The Maroons hung five on the board in the eighth to lead 11-3, highlighted by a Jack Howard two-run double to right field. In the bottom of the ninth, Emory & Henry capped the scoring as senior centerfielder Lukas Hart (Abingdon, Va.) drove in junior Ty Spires (Lancaster, Ohio) with a single down the left field line.

Connor Chiulli picked up the win, going 6.1 innings as he allowed three runs on seven hits. Wasp sophomore Noah Griffin (Fort Mill, S.C.) permitted four earned runs on eight hits while striking out five in six innings of work.

Emory & Henry will remain at home on Saturday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite University in an ODAC doubleheader at noon.
