Emory & Henry Baseball Splits Its Doubleheader With Covenant Saturday Afternoon

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (1-4) picked up a doubleheader split at Covenant College (2-1) Saturday afternoon for its first win of the season. The Scots earned a come-from-behind, 7-4, win in the opener while the Wasps dominated the nightcap, 13-4.

Game One – Covenant 7, Emory & Henry 4 (seven innings)
The Wasps got on the board with a run in the top of the first as junior first baseman Joe Tolone (Concord, N.C.) doubled down the left field line. Tolone got things started in E&H's three-run fourth for a 4-0 lead, drilling another RBI double. E&H played small ball for its other two runs in the third, with an infield single and a RBI groundout.

Covenant responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third as C.J. Edmond hit a RBI-double to left-centerfield and then scored on an error later in the frame. The Scots got within one, 4-3 in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Alex Gonzalez.

In the bottom of the sixth, Covenant pushed four runs across for the 7-4 final margin. Edmond plated a pair with a single through the left side while Brooks DuBose hand Hunter Christian each had sacrifice flies.

Conor Austin picked up the win in relief for the Scots, allowing just one hit and one walk in two innings of work. E&H junior Zach Houston (Waxhaw, N.C.) suffered the loss in relief, allowing four runs on four hits.

Game Two – Emory & Henry  13, Covenant 4 (seven innings)
E&H went up 2-0 in the top of the first on a home run by senior left fielder Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.) and pushed the margin to 7-1 after two as Kezele came up with a two-run double to centerfield.

The Wasps scored twice in the fifth to make the score 10-3 and added three in the seventh as Tolone stroked a two-run double down the left field line and Kezele added another RBI base hit for a 13-3 advantage. The Scots got a final run in the bottom of the seventh as Gonzalez drew his second bases-loaded walk of the day.

Senior Alex Laws (Hudson, N.C.) picked up the win in relief, allowing just one run on one hit with three strikeouts in three innings. Nick Pettit of Covenant was settled with the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks while completing just four outs.  

Up Next
Emory & Henry will open the home portion of its season on Saturday, February 22 when it hosts Mount St. Joseph University in a pair of seven-inning games. First pitch is set for noon.
