Emory & Henry Baseball Sweeps Mount St. Joseph, 4-3 And 12-1, Saturday Afternoon At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (3-4) earned its first sweep of the season as it took down Mount St. Joseph University (0-2) Saturday afternoon. The Wasps won the first contest by a 4-3 score in 10 innings and completed the sweep with a 12-1 drubbing of the Lions.

Game One – Emory & Henry 4, Mount St. Joseph 3 (10 innings)
The Wasps got on the board in the bottom of the first with three runs. Senior left fielder Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.) had a single to centerfield to start the scoring setting up junior third baseman Hayden Milley (Clover, S.C.)  for a two-run shot to centerfield.

After MSJ loaded the bases in the top of the second, Ryne Poli doubled down the left field line to tie the contest at three runs apiece.

The two teams settled into a rhythm and the scheduled seven innings came and went. In the bottom of the 10th, Emory & Henry got the walk-off on a squeeze play by junior Caleb Haynes (Covington, Va.) plating freshman second baseman Eli Milhorn (Bluff City, Tenn.) for the 4-3 final.

Senior Alex Laws (Hudson, N.C.) picked up the win in relief, allowing just two hits in the final three innings while striking out one. Oakley Billingsley suffered the loss, permitting one unearned run on one hit  in 2.1 innings of work.

Game Two – Emory & Henry  12, Mount St. Joseph 1 (seven innings)
E&H got on the board, 1-0, in the bottom of the second and opened its offense up with six runs in the  third. Junior Max Bailey (Chesnee, S.C.) highlighted the frame with a two-run single.

The Lions made it 7-1 in the top of the fourth as Roman Rothwell doubled to centerfield but the Wasps extended the margin to 10-1 in the fourth as Kezele put up a two-run double and freshman catcher Nathan Treadway (Valdese, N.C.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Emory & Henry capped the scoring with two in the fifth for the final 12-1 margin.

Junior Noah Griffin earned the complete-game win, throwing a three-hit gem with six strikeouts and just two walks. Jacob Hughes took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings.

Emory & Henry will be on the road Wednesday when it visits Johnson University for a pair of seven-inning games. First pitch for game one will be at 2:00 p.m.
