Emory & Henry Baseball Splits Its Doubleheader With Fredonia Sunday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (5-5) remained even on the year as it split a pair of seven-inning games with the State University of New York at Fredonia. The Blue Devils earned an 8-5 win in the opening contest while the Wasps claimed the nightcap by the same 8-5 score.

Game One – Fredonia 8, Emory & Henry 5 (seven innings)
The two squads opened the scoring in the first as each manufactured runs on RBI groundouts. The Blue Devils went ahead 5-1 midway through the fourth, highlighted by Russ Mistretta's double to centerfield.

Emory & Henry got a run back to make it 5-2 in the bottom half of the inning as junior right fielder Jacob Zoller (Culpeper, Va.) singled to right-center. A two-run homer by Fredonia's Tylor Murphy and an infield single by E&H left fielder Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.) made it 7-3 after the fifth.

The sixth frame saw Kole Brink steal home for the Blue Devils before junior third shortstop Caleb Haynes (Covington, Va.) and senior catcher Caleb Wallace (Mocksville, Va.) had bases-loaded RBI for the final 8-5 margin. The Wasps put a man in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to close the gap further.

Nicholas Lawlor earned the win, allowing one earned run on four hits in four innings of work while Kenny Ynoa grabbed the save, pitching the seventh. Wasp junior J.T. Agosto (Cornelius, N.C.) suffered the loss, permitting four runs on five hits and three strikeouts.

Game Two – Emory & Henry  8, Fredonia 5 (seven innings)
E&H scored three runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by a pair of base hits by freshman catcher Nathan Treadway (Valdese, N.C.) and sophomore second baseman Josh Woodard (Culpeper, Va.). The Wasps added two runs in the fourth as Haynes drove in two with a single to centerfield.

The Blue Devils closed the gap to 5-4 in the fifth as Murphy hit a grand slam to left-centerfield. In the bottom of the fifth, E&H responded with three runs to make the score 8-4. Kezele tagged a solo home run to get things started while Treadway had another RBI with a single up the middle. Fredonia capped the scoring in the sixth on an error by the right fielder but would get no closer than 8-5.

Junior Noah Griffin (Fort Mill, S.C.) earned the win, scattering four runs and nine hits over five innings while senior Alex Laws (Hudson, N.C.) picked up the save, allowing one unearned run on four hits in the final two innings. Fredonia's Sam Cestra took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in three innings.
